Censorship

In one of my other classes this semester we learned all about censorship. Censorship is when a book is challenged because it is said to not be appropriate for the library. As I found this topic interesting I decided to research what are some of the most commonly banned books in schools. Something that stood out to me was that a great majority of banned books have to do with transgender individuals. An example of this would be I Am Jazz by Jazz Jennings. This is so sad to me because today so many individuals are transgender. To me reading something like this is solely informational. Parents though have a right to choose what their children can and cannot learn about. In addition to this I saw multiple books that are banned today that were read to me when I was in high school such as To Kill a Mocking Bird and The Giver. These particular books were books I remember reading for English class. It is crazy to me the multitude of different reasons people will come up with for why they d...
When reading the  10 ideas for addressing accessibility in your library from Hopkins, 2004, I was thinking back to my own local library. For one thing I know from my own experience that my local library has multiple different options for listening to books on tape. My local library also has push button doors as well as an elevator for anyone who is in a wheelchair or cannot walk up stairs. Something interesting to me is that I do not recall ever seeing brail in my local library. I am surprised because books can be for anyone even the blind can read books by listening to them. Something else brought up was the idea of large print books. These are interesting because I know my local library carries quite a large selection of large print books. I never really thought about that some people need larger printed books to be able to see the words on the p...

Social Media and Video Games

The article “Teenagers Leading Happy, Connected Lives Online” written by KJ Dell’Antonia, follows an interesting report titled, “Teens, Technology and Friendships” from the Pew Foundation. This study was geared toward social media, video games and any other messaging apps. This study is interesting because it is not about have video games or social media are a hindrance. Rather, this study focuses on how these platforms are strengthening teenagers’ relationships. This study was done with teenagers between the ages of thirteen and seventeen. One of the major findings that stood out to me was the fact that only a small twenty five percent of teenagers reported that they see their friends outside of school every day. The article goes on to mention that teenagers may have less opportunities for hanging out in person than they did in the past. This fact stood out to me as the article itself was published back in 2015 when I was just graduating from high school myself. I personally did not o...
